January 2016 – One in five religious Americans is a veteran, according to the most recent data from the General Social Survey. Furthermore, veterans are most often Christian Protestants. After weighing influential factors such as the tendency for veterans to be older, from lower socioeconomic status, or American-born, evangelicals and black Protestants are twice as likely to be veterans as are those of no religion.
