January 2016 – Successful marriages and two-parent families help the economy reports Strong Families, Prosperous States, a study released in October by the Institute for Family Studies and American Enterprise Institute.
“Higher levels of marriage, and especially higher levels of married-parent families, are strongly associated with more economic growth, more economic mobility, less child poverty, and higher median family income at the state level in the United States,” the report concluded.
The study examined many factors including economic results of marriage versus cohabiting, divorce, and single parenting, and the associated impact on children and society. In particular, the research found that marriage has an especially positive effect on the economic wellbeing of men, who tend to be more productive in the workforce and make more money when they are married.
“Married men work about 400 hours more and make about $16,000 more per year than their otherwise similar single peers,” the study stated.
