May 2016 – Home School Legal Defense Association pointed out a telling phrase in a joint policy document released in December 2015 by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The document reveals what the federal government considers to be its authority over children.

The document declares: “It is the position of the Departments that all early childhood programs and schools recognize families as equal partners in improving children’s development, learning, and wellness across all settings, and over the course of their children’s developmental and educational experiences.”

“If the federal government has to ‘recognize’ parental authority over their own children, it clearly indicates the government thinks it’s in the driver’s seat to raise our children,” observed AFA vice president Buddy Smith.

The federal document loosely defined family as any collection of people who play a role in a child’s life, including parents, grandparents, foster parents, siblings, formal and informal guardians.
