April 2017 – Iceland is experiencing a downturn in religion among its populace, as well as a remarkable lack of young Icelanders who hold to the creation account of Christianity as an answer to how the universe came into being.

A poll conducted by the polling firm Maskína found that 46.4% of Icelanders claim to hold to religious belief, the lowest figure to date, with more than 40% of young Icelanders identifying as atheist. The poll also found that Icelanders younger than 25 completely deny that the universe was created by an all-powerful being: 93.9% believe the universe was created by the “big bang”, 6.1% have no opinion, and 0.0% believe in the creation account of Genesis.

The poll was conducted on behalf of Sidmennt, the Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association, an Icelandic atheist group.
