July-August 2017 – The social network giant Facebook is battling a new war with porn. A recently leaked document revealed that nearly 54,000 cases of “revenge porn” and “sextortion” appear on news feeds every month.

Facebook defines revenge porn as attempts to use intimate imagery to shame, humiliate, or gain revenge against someone. Sextortion is an attempt to extort money or additional imagery of a person by threatening to release compromising or embarrassing images of him or her to a social network group.

The company relies heavily on users to report abuse cases, but it is also developing image recognition software that will identify and remove pornographic and inappropriate images from the site.

In a presentation for moderators, Facebook said, “We allow nudity when it is depicted in art like paintings, sculptures, and drawings. We do not allow digitally created nudity or sexual activity. We drew this line so that we could remove a lot of very sexual digital nudity.”
