November 2021Israeli archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the earthquake they believe was referenced twice in the Old Testament, once in Zechariah 14 and again in Amos 1. The excavations were made in Jerusalem within the City of David National Park and revealed an extensive layer of destruction caused by the collapse of a building during the quake which occurred about 2,800 years ago.

The directors of the excavation, Joe Uziel and Ortal Kalaf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, described the earthquake as one of the strongest and most damaging quakes of ancient times.

“The people of Judah didn’t forget this earthquake,” said Kalaf, “and even 200 years later, the prophet Zechariah mentioned it.
