September 2015 – In the 2015 State of the First Amendment, a yearly survey sponsored by Newseum Institute, Americans were asked to name the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment. Of those, 57% named freedom of speech, 19% freedom of religion, 10% freedom of press, 10% right to assemble, and 2% right to petition. Thirty-three percent could not name a single First Amendment right. Additionally, 51% stated that the U.S. Constitution establishes a Christian nation. (See “Civic Ignorance,” AFA Journal, 7/15.)
