August 2019 – American high school students in advanced placement history classes may be exposed to a biased, leftist version of American history in a textbook written by James W. Fraser. In 2018, the second edition of By the People: A History of the United States, AP Edition was published by British-based Pearson Education.

A professor of history and education at New York University, Fraser has advocated in other writings for an American departure from capitalism, drawing on the examples of Marxists such as Che Guevara and Paulo Freire.

By the People disregards historical objectivity, indicating that President Trump is mentally ill, his conservative supporters are heartless racists and sexists, and President Ronald Reagan was a greedy fascist. Pearson claims the textbook was peer-reviewed with rigor for integrity. Others who have read the text dispute Pearson’s claim, believing that Fraser’s biased depiction of American history should be removed immediately from high school curricula.
