August 2020While social distancing measures forced many to cancel spring and summer vacations, a surge was experienced in outdoor recreation sales. Camping, RV, and road essentials saw double- and triple-digit increases as parks began to open throughout the country.

For instance, findings from the 2020 North American Camping Report fielded by Kampgrounds of America in late April showed sales increased significantly for the following: recreation tents (+30%), hammocks (+103%), camp sets (+119%), grills (+74%), smokers (+94%), bike trailers/joggers (+133%).

In March alone, adult leisure bicycle sales rose 121% compared to the previous year. An added benefit was experienced by small businesses that were allowed to remain open under essential travel allowances, as many major department stores were unable to keep up with the demand.

“Some of the most memorable vacations come from experiencing God’s creation together,” said Buddy Smith, AFA vice president. “This shift is definitely good for the family.”
