January-February 2019 – As of January 1, New York City natives will be able to change genders on their official birth certificates from male or female to X, a non-binary identity category. In early October 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the ordinance into law. Known as the Gender Marker Bill, the ordinance makes it easier for one to change genders legally by simply submitting a personal affidavit rather than a letter from a physician or an affidavit from a health care provider.
