November 2019Ruling against the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has declared that the Latin cross on the official seal of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, may remain on the seal and on other government property.

The court’s ruling in FFRF v. County of Lehigh clarified that because the seal falls under the category of “religious references or imagery in public monuments, symbols, mottos, displays, and ceremonies,” its placement does not violate the Establishment Clause but, rather, “such longstanding symbols benefit from a strong presumption of constitutionality.”
